notes from a legal history conference

Last weekend, the American Society for Legal History held its annual conference in Washington, DC. This was the first time that I attended an academic conference and I am glad that I went because, inter alia, I got to meet Justice O’Connor at a reception for the Society at the Supreme Court (Ginsburg and Souter were also at the reception).

The Society sponsors the Law and History Review, “America's leading legal history journal, encompassing American, English, European, and ancient legal history.” If you’re interested in legal history, this might be a good journal for you. One nice thing about the journal is that many of its articles available on the History Cooperative website. Since I’m especially interested in 17th and 18th century English and American legal history as well as statutory construction, I liked the following recent articles:

Sean Kelsey, Politics and Procedure in the Trial of Charles I (forthcoming)

Daniel J. Hulsebosch, The Ancient Constitution and Expanding Empire: Sir Edward Coke’s British Jurisprudence (Fall 2003) (at the conference, Professor Hulsebosch, who is at the St. Louis University School of Law, presented a paper entitled “Imperial Remix: From the Ancient Constitution to Constitutional Law”)

Lewis A. Grossman, James Coolidge Carter and Mugwump Jurisprudence (Fall 2002) (discussing 19th century attitudes toward common law vs. legislation as means of legal change)

new issue of the german law journal online

The German Law Journal has put a new issue online. The journal is publishing its articles free of charge and would like to continue to do so. They would be interested in advice on potential sponsors. For more information, contact the journal through its web contact form.

Thanks to Margaret at Transblawg (a German-English legal translation blog) for pointing this out!
