surprisingly place for a good quote

Found in The Paradoxes of Mr. Pond, a collection of detective stories I'm reading:

"But Love is like that. It is a thing of great moments; and it lives on the memory of moments. Perhaps it is a fragile illusion; perhaps, on the other hand, it is eternal and beyond time. But Friendship eats up time."

some words from the pundits

Here's Dahlia's commentary on this morning's big case. Here's the Associated Press's version, via the New York Times. Here's the Washington Post's version. Here's Nina Totenberg's version, from NPR.

Dahlia, of course, is the funniest of them all. Which is why I love her so. Who else writes stuff like, "He raps dramatically on his podium, rousing Justice Thomas from his delightful Saturday morning nap"? Not Nina. Not Linda.

supreme court stories

At some point, I really will type in my stories about the two Supreme Court cases I saw this year, but for the time being, I'll just admit that, no, I was too wussy today to hold up my bright yellow signs saying "We [heart] Dahlia Lithwick" in a goofy attempt to get a mention in Slate, as well as get noticed by my favorite Supreme Court columnist. Maybe next time, when it won't seem as much like I'm making light of free-speech infringements.

some news

(told to me, via phone, by Ed.) Iguana-throwing UK woman convicted. How can someone throw an iguana? Sad.

Speaking of which, I miss my iguana. My parents have had him all year. They had promised to take him to me the next time they visit, but keep postponing their visit. So they can keep Spiro all to themselves, I think. Sigh.

writing ideas

Something either called "The Politics of Frustration" or "The Jurisprudence of Frustration." Something about frustration as a driving force, and how it exhibits itself in advocacy (legal or political). How it can distract, and how it can be harnessed.

egad, terrible situation avoided

Death Cab for Cutie tickets selling out in Boston. Thanks for the alert, Casey! And thanks for reading my get-tickets-in-advance notice the wrong way. It was Le Tigre we missed.

Another reminder to myself: Get tickets a lot further in advance.

whoo!

I am now an experienced oral advocate. This is actually the first time I've done a Major Career Thing and not had it feel anticlimactic. I actually feel good. I actually feel more confident. Wow.

More later.

what is it with chicago, anyway?

My first big scientific presentation was in Chicago, at an American Chemical Society national conference. My first legal oral argument will be in Chicago next week. Chicago seems to be my city of firsts, with respect to public speaking. It is weird.

Chicago, however, is also my second favorite city in the world. It has books, it has museums, it has great indie music. And it isn't all stuck on itself, like many other cities. Plus its public transport system runs all night. Oh, and Amy's moving there as well, and Elizabeth lives there, and there's this guy Adam who clerked with me, so I actually know people there, yay.

I will not be visiting anyone on this Chicago trip, however, because I have no time. Less than twenty-four hours. That really sucks, because I'd like to see people.

goodness

Goodness is taking a mineral salt bath, at hot hot temperatures, while listening to a Tortoise CD and reading a book on, well, salt. Mmm. My skin is softer and I feel more edified.

ooh, gossip!

From an article on AP:

"O'Connor, promoting a new book last month, told NBC's 'Dateline' that she and Chief Justice William Rehnquist had dated when they were both attending Stanford law school in the 1950s."

What?!!! Now *that's* wild.

some words from a friend

On the topic of patent litigation, which Andy has somehow gotten assigned to do, even though he has no tech or patent law background whatsoever: "It's awful. I'm on some software case, and have to review all the programmers' emails. There's all this stuff I'd never seen before -- stuff I wish I'd never seen. Terrible computer jokes. Bizarro codes. Science fiction quotes. Pictures made of letters and symbols."

Welcome to the world in which I grew up, Brown poli-sci boy.

the worst news all week

Well, to me personally, that is. Abie's partner for The Saloon bought him out. Which means that my favorite bar will be closing and reopening as a (probably) different entity. I kept saying to Brady all night, change is bad, change is bad. Sigh. I hope Abie opens up a new place.

.: 12:46 PM .:

new plan

I've decided to put on photography exhibits. In my office. When my coworkers walk by, I will tell them it's my exhibit. I will show them my installations. They will think I am bonkers, and that will amuse me.

I will start putting out a schedule of exhibits.

My first exhibit will be of facades and alleys. Mostly alleys. Because alleys are neat.

the cold

(by Wendell Berry)

How exactly good it is
to know myself
in the solitude of winter;

my body containing its own
warmth, divided from all
by the cold; and to go

separate and sure
among the trees cleanly
divided, thinking of you

perfect too in your solitude,
your life withdrawn into
your own keeping

--to be clear, poised
in perfect self-suspension
toward you, as though frozen.

And having known fully the
goodness of that, it will be
good also to melt.
