I have a few legal favorites: favorite Supreme Court commentator, Dahlia Lithwick; favorite Justice, Stephen Breyer; favorite legal scholar, Cass Sunstein. It doesn't mean I always agree with them; but it does mean I enjoy reading everything they write. Anyway, Cass has a new article out in The American Prospect.

This has nothing to do with the law, but The Onion is especially hilarious today. Women Now Empowered by Everything a Woman Does. And even better, Girlfriend Stops Reading David Foster Wallace Breakup Letter at Page 20.

even more news, because i have yet to leave the house
But really. I plan on doing so today. I'm pretty excited about it, even.
Okay. First there's a "Battle in Utah's Oil Patch Over Drilling."
Also, Congress has approved a plan to destroy 77 homes at the edge of Everglades National Park, jump-starting efforts to restore flows to the ailing River of Grass after 14 years of delay.

random environmental events in and around dc
At the Environmental Law Institute: * Endangered Subject? Environmental Protection in the 108th Congress on February 27 (I will be there), * Reconciling Trade and Environment: The Approach of the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement on March 4 (I will probably not be there, though everyone from my old law journal should go and solicit articles!), and * Meet US Assistant Attorney General Thomas L. Sansonetti on my birthday, March 13 (I will not be there, having met my boss already).
At the National Building Museum: * Redesigning Cities on February 26 and * Showcasing Sustainable Technology in Federal Buildings on March 6.
Also, March 13 (my birthday!) to 23 are the dates of the DC Environmental Film Festival. (I kinda want to see The Last Salt Caravan on March 21---Michele? Wanna come?).
Okay, this isn't really an environmental law event, but on March 5, the American Constitution Society is holding a lunch discussion with Seth Waxman on campaign finance reform. I'm planning on going if my RSVP isn't too late.
in other news
On Friday, the EPA extended its deadline to finalize the new new-source-review rules.

oral advocacy advice
Strangely enough, the best advice I'd gotten was from a friend of mine (an environmental advocate here who specializes in amicus cases): think of an oral argument as a very in-depth discussion with three very smart people, and just enjoy it as a conversation.
That nice and compact piece of advice gave me a better idea of how to prep for oral arguments. But even more importantly, it made me less nervous for my first few oral arguments. Which is a really cool thing.

mmm
Just had lunch at Teaism with some other Gilman clerks at the Department of Justice. (It's taken us that long to organize lunch.) We talked about life at DOJ, and about our fabulous and (yes) quirky judge. Lunch was very nice.
in the news
Massachusetts governor may slash state SUV fleet. Rock. Or a start at rocking, at least.
And Erwin Chemerinsky, my fed courts savior, has an article in Findlaw entitled A Question The Supreme Court Will Soon Decide: Can Disabled Individuals Sue State Governments for Discrimination In Their Services, Programs, and Activities? It's about Medical Board of California v. Hason.
November. November I can try to join the Supreme Court bar I think.

other bloggy catchup
This Onion article is going around DOJ. My friends have asked me to put a warning on it, though. So here it is: "Warning: there's a very scary picture in this article."
There's an article on AP Newswire entitled "GOP Works to Tilt Environmental Policy", reminding me that I never did quite get around to summarizing the environmental riders, oh well.
Oh, and I wish my name were James Spinymussel.

Chinese river polluted with salad dressing.
I shouldn't lump The Onion in here (because the salad dressing article is real, and pretty bad, though it sounds hilarious), but I will. Under the headline "Department Of The Interior Sets Aside Two Million Acres For Car Commercials," there's
WASHINGTON, DC—Seeking to "safeguard our precious wildlands for future generations of SUV ads," the Department of the Interior set aside two million acres in Wyoming and Colorado for use in car commercials Monday. "If we do not protect this land," Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton said, "we may one day have no place for Dodge Rams to run wild and free."
