Supreme Court strikes down Texas' ban on gay sex.

personal and unofficial
I think I can say this: I find it kinda funny how short some of the blurbs on the affirmative action cases are. Most blurbs on Supreme Court decisions tend to be longer, going into some of the reasoning. But here, there are seven different opinions for each case! So I think the wires are just trying to sum up the result.

still busy, and with a cold, too, ugh
So there aren't any updates, really. Though I did take a brief break from work to go to the DOJ Pride ceremony, which was held in the Senate building this year. (See the organization's letter about it.) Though adverse circumstances caused the relocation of the ceremony from the Great Hall in the Main Justice building to the Russell Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office building, the event was actually really well done. And inspirational. I even got a bit teary. Susan Sommer from Lambda Legal (who received an award for her work on Lawrence v. Texas) and Joseph Clark (an AUSA who received an award for his work on hate crimes) spoke, and were really amazing. Elizabeth Birch of the Human Rights Campaign and Robert Cromwell of the FBI were great too. And there was an unannounced appearance/speech by Barney Frank! Who was hilarious in person. I have to say, I think what happened really galvanized everyone.
In a non-Pride related note, I just got referred to as "the shyest lawyer-blogger" someone knows. ;)
Okay. Back to work.

time
It's been awhile since I've posted. It might be another week or so till I post much again. Got kinda busy at work, sorry, plus I have other things distracting me. Soon I'll get back in the swing of things. But I've been keeping my book log and my concert log relatively up to date, so check those out!

Justice to Let Staff Honor Gay Pride: Department Says Office Events Were Not Barred
Friday, June 06, 2003
a quick note
I am in in the process of doing more redactions to this thing. Just to let you know, in case some pages are hard to load.
a new note: This has absolutely nothing to do with the Pride stuff. Please, no conspiracy theories. Everything's fine.
the official DOJPride link. . .
. . . to the memo in protest of the Pride event cancellation is here.

a letter from the DOJ Pride Board of Directors
Cut-and-pasted with permission: A message from the DOJ Pride Board of Directors:
Department officials notified us earlier this week that DOJ Pride will not be allowed to hold its annual Pride Month awards ceremony at the Department of Justice. We were told that the decision was made by the Attorney General’s Office in accordance with a new Department "policy" that allegedly prohibits heritage or pride month commemorations unless they are supported by a Presidential Proclamation. (As you probably know, President Bush has not issued such a proclamation relating to LGBT issues.) We had never heard of this so-called "policy" prior to this week, and we were told that it has never been committed to writing. We have asked for a written explanation of the Department’s decision to prevent us from holding a Pride Month celebration, as well as the opportunity to meet with a representative of the Attorney General’s Office to register our objections to that decision. Thus far, we have not received a response to either of these requests.
The DOJ Pride Board believes that the Department’s decision is discriminatory and a major step backward for diversity and equality. DOJ Pride has been allowed to commemorate Pride Month at the Department every year since at least 1997, either in the form of a ceremony or prominent display in the Main Building.
Prior to being informed of the Department’s decision, the Board had scheduled a Pride Month awards ceremony for Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in the Great Hall. We had planned to honor two individuals at that ceremony: (1) Susan Sommer of Lambda Legal Defense for her organization’s work on Lawrence and Garner v. Texas, a case now pending before the United States Supreme Court that seeks to overturn a Texas law criminalizing same-sex sodomy; and (2) Joseph Clark, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Columbia, who handled the prosecution in United States v. Sammie Jones, in which the defendant was convicted for assaulting a transgendered male who had simply sat next to him at a local bus stop. We plan to present awards to these two deserving attorneys, regardless of whether the Department permits us to go forward with a ceremony on June 18.
Please rest assured that the Board will continue pressing the Department to reverse its decision and allow us to hold our Pride Month ceremony in the Great Hall. We will keep you informed about our efforts and the Department’s response.

yet another field day update
Here. But argh, I don't want to go to a stadium concert. I hate stadium concerts. At least the ticketmaster web page says we're getting refunds.
