--{ i'm not a veggie... }------

...but I play one on tv. No, really, I do. Or did. Three years ago, Amy and I blundered into a TV commercial for a vegan restaurant. Never saw the commercial, but apparently other people saw us in it.

Anyway, so this year I haven't been cooking with meat. Don't know how it happened, because I never sat down and said, "I'm not gonna cook with meat," but it has. Which is for the better, because the meat industry really is pretty bad for the environment. (Seeing that my disapproval of meat derives more from ecological/environmental reasons rather than animal rights/humane treatment of animal reasons, I don't feel quite the pressure to place on myself an absolute ban that others do, but hey.)

My friends and I have also decided to check out all the vegetarian restaurants in the District of Columbia area. So far we've been to

* Food for Thought in the U Street neighborhood: which does have some meat entrees, so it's not technically vegetarian, but also has Amy's favorite vegan nachos. So. We all actually went there right before going to a concert at the Black Cat. I got the vegan lasagna, but I forget what everyone else got. Ilana got a vegan stir-fry, I think, and some dessertey thing. The barbeque seitanwich there is great, too.

* Soul Vegetarian Restaurant on Georgia Ave: Super yummy! Huuuge breakfast platter on Sundays, cool rotating dishes the rest of the week, and cheap, too! Not sure Casey was as psyched, but Ilana and Jason and I wolfed down a lot. Ilana and Paul and Janki and I went there again later, and again we ate like the pigs we are. Ilana had some kind of sandwich, Janki had seitan gyros, and Paul and I had vegan lasagna and "Jerusalem steak" (a sort of vegan salisbury steak, as far as I could tell). Paul was like, "I'm coming back here every night!"

* Amma Vegetarian Kitchen in Georgetown: I want to go back there again and have the idli. When we were there last, we ordered a bunch of different platters (including a spinach curry, and eggplant curry, and a dosa) and split them; all were deeelish. And the carrot halwa was superb, too, though it's inspired me to try to make my own.

We're going to The Vegetable Garden in Rockville next. (A big affair, with me, Ilana, Jason, Maureen, Paul, and Epin, at least). I'm looking forward to it, as the pictures on the web page make me drool. And then maybe Harmony Cafe. Paul, however, is obsessed with going to Liquid Earth in Baltimore. Which now that I read about it, I want to visit, too, because its vegetarian reuben was mentioned on Homicide. Anyway, hopefully this can be a regular thing. It has, weirdly enough, inspired Paul to say "We should start a restaurant!" every time I see him. Yeah, on top of being enviro attorneys.

Amy, Casey--next time any you come down to visit again, I'll have a better idea of what to recommend. Darren, Paula, David--you should visit so as to take advantage of my better hosting capabilities. ;) (Though you snobs can probably find better grub in NY and Edinburgh anyways.)
